That installed in just a minute or two and automatic mirroring started immediately. As soon as I received it, I checked the hard drive and ordered a matching one. I'm very happy with this drive, have recommended it to other people and will probably buy another one soon to act as a music/video/data server for my home computers. I bought this NAS primarily for use as a back-up server for my home office laptop. It installed very easily and the software was simple and intuitive yet gave me nice options for backing up data. It came with a 5900 rpm Seagate Barracuda LP drive, 7200 might have been nicer but with late night back-ups I haven't had any speed issues.
The device also comes with software to let you access files over the Internet but download speeds are terrible. If you just need to share files on the local network, it's great. Media server FAIL. Shame on Netgear for marketing this NAS as a media server.
If you like hacking, you'll like this device. I am a bit of a techie and even for me getting the ReadyNAS to work right has been a pain in the butt. For backups it works great. It starts scanning files in the middle of a big transfer thus causing the copy to fail. Unfortunately the DLNA implementation on the ReadyNAS Duo is not nearly consumer-ready. For example, I was having trouble copying files to the ReadyNAS from my PC. The only way to solve the problem is to turn off the auto-update feature and do a manual rescan every time you add more media. You might as well just get Dropbox.
If you want to enjoy streaming media, look elsewhere. I bought this NAS because Netgear was advertising its ability to stream media files to devices such as my PS3. The problem turned out to be the automatic update feature of the DLNA server. The upside is that the Duo is very customizable.
I am using it as excess storage for my media and it handles the job seamlessly. All of the extra features makes the user experience that much better.
Get one now. I can now rest that all my music, pictures, and video have an extra level of protection.
I will certainly upgrade the hard drives to 2TB when my storage needs grow. I am even able to stream media on the ReadyNas to my PS3.
This handy little box has been a great addition to my home network. Installation and setup is easy and fast and the web interface is intuitive.
Add in the NAS Vault for offsite backup and you have a great system in place for protecting and storing your data.
Got 02 1.5 TB Hard disks from TigerDirect for cheap and loaded up in a breeze.Features of this NAS is great. Great product. Easy to configure.Low power consumption, now I don't need to leave my PC on (400W) to share my files.Pay attention if you start to put user authentication because you might see folders not being accessible.Highly recommended.
I use a RAID-1 configuration, so my data on one of these 500 GB disks is backed up on the other.Aside from storing important data, I use my Duo to host a version of Logitech's Squeezebox Server, which allows me to use their music system (Logitech Squeezebox Boom, Logitech Squeezebox Duet, etc) throughout my house. on another site (shop around). Overall, very good product. Purchasing the diskless version allows you to choose your own disk drives (the Seagate drives that had been bundled with the Duo were not rated very well). Highly recommended. Popped these drives into the Duo and they have worked very well since then.
It might require more know-how than other NAS devices, but I am very impressed by the reliability and flexibility. I've owned a ReadyNAS Duo for about 8 months and it has performed very well. I purchased two WD RE2-GP 500GB drives (WD RE2-GP WD5000ABPS) -- got two for $60 (very good deal). The Duo is also DLNA compliant, and I can use it to view personal pictures and videos on my network-connected TV.
